Decorating Ideas for the Fall Season

When the cooler weather arrives in October, I enjoy updating the decor around the house to make it feel like the seasons have changed. I thought that I would share a few easy decorating ideas to make your home even more festive and comfortable.

WREATHS

Adding a wreath to your front door or entry way is one of the easiest ways to welcome in the new season. Whether you want to go the DIY route or purchase one, there are so many choices it will not be hard to find a wreath that fits your style. From dried flowers and eucalyptus leaves to raffia and lavender, you can make a choice based your favorite flowers or autumn scent. You can find beautiful wreaths at your favorite stores like Anthropologie and Pottery Barn or go straight to Etsy for a unique selection.

OH, MY GOURD!

Pumpkins are another favorite way to add a color to your décor that go beyond the traditional choice as a jack-o-lantern for Halloween. A variety of gourds nestled in Fall foliage will make a beautiful table centerpiece or you can place some in a basket to brighten your front porch. Orange doesn't go with your décor. No problem – go neutral with white pumpkins and add them as accents on the mantel or side tables. If you have time and a creative flair, get out your paint and create a one-of-a-kind pumpkin to match your décor!

DECORATIVE GLASSWARE

I was inspired to change out the glassware in the bar after I read a terrific idea from Elle Décor.

I gathered glasses from my storage cabinet that were in fall colors – green, orange, any that were trimmed in gold, and even deep blue – and placed them in the bar area of the living room. Voila! What a great way to add to the fall feeling without leaving the house.

FOLIAGE FROM JUST OUTSIDE YOUR DOOR

Another easy way to create the seasonal feel is to use fall foliage from right outside your front door. Use small branches with colorful leaves in vases instead of flowers or add a few magnolia branches to a larger container to set beside the fireplace or entry way. Or try your local crafts store where you will probably find a great selection of dried flowers, wheat, lavender, or berries for craft into an arrangement.

SOME SPICE IS NICE

Does anything make your home feel more like Fall than the smell of cinnamon & cloves? Sometimes the scented packets or candles you find in stores are too strong for me, so I found a better way to create those beautiful fall aromas. Even better, the only ingredients I need are already in my pantry! Boil a pot of water with cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, orange peel, whatever scents you like, and soon your home will smell like Fall personified. You can even take it up a level and boil a pot of apple cider with some spices to have a wonderful smelling home and a delicious treat. What could be better?

Wishing everyone a cozy and comfortable Fall season!
