Best Pet Friendly Hikes in Los Angeles

Updated: Apr 29, 2021

In Los Angeles, we are very fortunate because our weather rarely gets in the way of keeping our dogs active. One way to ensure that your furry buddy is getting the exercise they need to live a long and healthy life is to switch up their regular walks, which also benefits pet owners who can use some additional steps during the day. Even though I’m sure your pup appreciates getting out of the house and going on a stroll around your neighborhood, it’s important to explore (and smell) different sights and surroundings because it increases their mental stimulation! Here are a few trails to explore in Los Angeles that will keep you and your dog in shape as we enter into the holiday season!

Cahuenga Peak (The Hollywood Sign hike) and The Wisdom Tree

Address: 3052 Lake Hollywood Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068

Cahuenga Peak trail offers a fantastic view of the infamous Hollywood Sign and an expansive scope of Los Angeles while offering relief from heavily populated hiking spots. It is a little more rugged than the traditional hike most people take to the Hollywood Sign, but Fido will appreciate the extra exercise vs. an overpopulated trail. Totaling at 3 miles, the hike from Wonder View to Cahuenga Peak stops at another famous attraction, The Wisdom Tree – the lone survivor of the Hollywood Hills fire in 2007. When you are ascending to the Wisdom Tree, be aware of other dogs on the single-track path, especially if your pup doesn’t play well with others.

Eaton Canyon Natural Area Park

Address: 1750 N Altadena Dr, Pasadena, CA 91107

Right outside of Los Angeles, you’ll find this beautiful trail in lovely Pasadena. This hike is a real gem because it features a 40-foot waterfall with a small pool at it’s base. Eaton Canyon Natural Area Park is about 3 miles round trip. Dogs must remain on their leashes, but they’ll be happy to trot beside you through the shady pine tree lined trail!

Sandstone Peak/Circle X Ranch

Address: 12896 Yerba Buena Road, Malibu, CA, 90265

This former Boy Scout camp, tucked in the canyons above Malibu, is a real treat for pets and owners alike. Head up to Sandstone Peak, the highest summit in the Santa Monica mountains if you’re looking for a challenging hike. Sandstone Peak was recently voted the best hike in California. If you’re looking for something a little less challenging, head towards the Grotto, where you and your dog can enjoy the sights and scents along the creek.

P.S. Here’s a video of Madison on one of her strolls!
